The Big Green Master Plan

You may remember that as part of our Big Green Master Plan, we introduced the children to Ecobricks.  An Ecobrick is a plastic bottle filled with used plastic which cannot be recycled.  The bottles are packed to a high density to create a reusable building block.  Ecobricks are being used all over the world to make furniture, garden spaces, walls and structures.  By creating Ecobricks, you are reducing waste that goes to landfill and reducing the amount of plastic that can potentially enter the natural environment that in time cause irreparable harm to wildlife.  We have challenged the children to make the most dense Ecobrick they can.

Congratulations to Megan Richards who is currently in the lead with the Ecobrick challenge.  She has come into school with an Ecobrick weighing in at 503 grams.  Here she is demonstrating how strong it is!  We wonder how long she’ll be holding this school record!

Year 1 trip to Arundel Castle

Year 1 had a fantastic day at Arundel Castle yesterday. We toured the castle grounds learning about all the different features. We dressed up and had a great time holding all the medieval weapons! Our favourite part was seeing all of the different dungeons, they were so spooky! Oubliette – to forget! Oubliette – to forget!

The Big Green Master Plan

The children are very excited about our mission to become an international Green Flag Award Eco-School.  As a school, we are fully committed to educating all our children about the environmental issues facing our world and helping them understand that we are all responsible for making our future more sustainable.  The children have been introduced to our ‘Pledge Tree’, where pupils and staff alike are encouraged to make an ‘eco’ pledge, write it on a leaf and stick it on the pledge tree.  The idea is that the tree ‘grows’ throughout the year as more pledges are made.  They are also excited about making Ecobricks and hope that we will end up with enough of them to make a structure of our own.

We held our first eco meeting at lunchtime today which focused on Energy, Water and Waste.  Our eco-monitors worked really hard in the meeting and came up with some fantastic ideas, which we will be exploring in the coming days.  They are already proving to be a very valuable part of the team.  Thank you eco-monitors!
