St Ives Pupils Give Up Their Toys to Help Others On Valentine’s Day

The Toy Project is a London based charity that recycles new and used toys and gives them to children who really need them. The toys and books that St Ives pupils donated will be sent to children in one of eight schools the charity works with in Grenada.
The idea came from Year 1 teacher, Miss Jackson, who has long admired the work of the Toy Project and decided that Valentine’s Day was the perfect time to teach the pupils that love can be shown in many different ways. On 14th February, the children came to school laden with toys and books, fully prepared to give them to children who may not have any. As well as sending the donations, Miss Jackson asked the children to write letters and draw pictures to accompany their toys to show the children in Grenada that they have friends in the UK. Miss Jackson will be driving the toys up to London to the Toy Project’s office In Islington on Saturday to start them on their journey to Grenada.
Miss Jackson said: “I am delighted that children across the whole school have thrown themselves into this idea with huge gusto and generosity. You can never be too young to learn to help others, especially those who are less fortunate than you.”
Agreeing with this, Mrs Kay Goldsworthy, Head Teacher at St Ives, said “Kindness and thinking about others form an integral part of our ethos here at St Ives, so I am delighted that the children have taken such an active part in donating their toys and books to the Toy Project. We plan to make this an annual event.”
