What an exciting morning for Reception!  Surrey Fire and Rescue came to visit as part of their topic 'People Who Help Us'.  The children learnt about the different jobs the fire service does, the uniforms they wear and then learnt all about the fire engine and the different ladders, hoses, cutting equipment and trauma kits they keep on board.  But the best bit was definitely when the children helped spray the hose - the water came out so quickly.  It was such good fun!  The children also loved the sound of the siren when the fire engine left the school.  Thank you Surrey Fire and Rescue for such an exciting and informative morning.

We were delighted to welcome Nick Hinchcliffe, Honorary Chairman of the Haslemere branch of the Royal Society of St. George, to assembly on Monday.  Alongside FOSI (The Friends of St Ives), The Royal Society of St George have been instrumental in helping us to raise the necessary funds to purchase two Greenpower Goblin G2 fully electric racing cars.  Nick visited to see the progress the children have made and to present a beautiful framed certificate, commemorating the generous donation from the Haslemere branch, which was matched by the central branch of the Royal Society.  We look forward to Nick attending one of the After School Club sessions to see the children build the cars.

What a beautiful morning for Forest School! Year 3 spent this morning considering the question 'What lives in the forest?' The children thought about what living meant & challenged each other to think of as many examples as they could. We walked through the forest, looking for the living things we had talked about as well as clues & signs of other living things we might not see, such as rabbit holes & badger setts. Great work Year 3!

This week in Gymnastics, the children in Nursery worked on making 'smiley' shapes (shapes that resemble a smile) with their bodies, including a dish and an arch.  They also tried to make shapes like a mountain and a table.  On the wall bars, the children used their body strength to hold on for 3 seconds whilst making shapes like a pencil or a star.  Well done everyone. Mrs Woodward was so impressed with your listening skills & how well you made your shapes!

This morning we started Anti-Bullying Week with an assembly, led by Mrs Cooper, our Wellbeing Champion. We all wore odd socks to celebrate our differences and learnt how this year's theme is 'Make a Noise About Bullying.' Mrs Cooper explained that silence gives bullies power and the best way to stamp out bullying is to speak up. Thank you for an excellent assembly Mrs Cooper and to The Anti-Bullying Alliance for giving us the tools to learn these very important life lessons.

Year 2 carried out a school litter pick this week, as part of their My Kinder World topic. Well done Year 2 - every piece of litter collected could be an animal's life saved!

In Gymnastics this week, Year 5 pupils practised apparatus skills and partner work. They created synchronised vaulting routines which Mrs Woodward videoed so they could review and try to perfect. The class also practised some assisted lifts enabling partners to perform shaped jumps in the air.

Reception children have thrown themselves into the second half of term with gusto! They've continued their work on triangles and circles in Maths and loved it when Miss Tapp brought out her magical shape bag and they had to close their eyes, feel for a shape inside the bag, describe it and then tell the rest of the class what shape it was. They then continued their work on circles and triangles in Art by looking at Kandinsky's work. In Music, they've been learning the song 'The Animal Train'. They familiarised themselves with the animals in the song - frog, mouse, snake and duck - and then used instruments to replicate the sounds the animals make. Well done Reception. It's so lovely to see you raring to go after half term!

An incredible standard in this year's Pumpkin Carving Competition.  Thank you to everyone who painted, carved, designed and even grew pumpkins.  The judges had a very tough decision choosing the winners.  This wraps up a very busy first half of term. Wishing all you a restful half term and we look forward to seeing you all on 6th November.

Year 1 finished off this half of term with a trip to Arundel Castle, which they loved exploring.  They also loved learning all the new castle vocabulary they picked up throughout the day!
