Odd Socks Day

We’ve kicked off Anti-Bullying Week by taking part in Odd Socks Day today, taking time to celebrate our differences and how we are all unique. Year 6 pupils also produced posters to go around school marking this year’s theme of ‘Reach Out’. Thank you to the Anti Bullying Alliance for helping communities create safer environments in which children and young people can live, grow, play and learn.

World Kindness Day

Today is World Kindness Day and the theme this year is ‘Be Kind Whenever Possible’. Our culture is one of such outstanding pastoral care that kindness is ingrained in everything we do. However, we’ll be considering this theme and others as we approach Anti-Bullying Week, with Odd Socks Day tomorrow. We can’t wait to see you in your array of colourful socks and to celebrate how wonderful people’s differences are!

Year 3 Science

Year 3 had fun investigating forces in Science this week. They compared how fast cars moved down slopes with different surfaces and explored how far the cars would travel. They used their teamwork skills to work in groups and their measuring skills to evaluate their results.

Gorgeous, happy photos of our Nursery children taking inspiration from our Fireworks Night to recreate the colours and sparkle of fireworks using paint and glitter. Looks such fun!

Year 1 Forest School

Yay! The sun was out for Year 1’s Forest School today. The children were taught about fire safety and how to start a fire. They then gathered some different size logs from the dry log store and helped to build one. Once the fire was burning nicely, the best bit came……. toasting marshmallows and eating them. Lucky Year 1!

Year 1 English

Today in their English lesson, Year 1 discussed the story of the Gingerbread Man. The children were then allowed to design & decorate their own! There was a great deal of excitement & a few jelly sweets eaten! They then used adjectives to describe their finished products. Great work Year 1!

One World Festival

A brilliant end to the first half of term with our 3-day ‘One World’ festival. The festival had an environmental theme where the children explored the impact humans have on the environment and the opportunities and challenges of moving towards carbon neutrality.

The festival started with the chance to investigate our environmental footprint on the earth through an assembly, a virtual reality workshop and songs on the theme. The children learnt how to make positive differences through upcycling discarded furniture, using renewable energy sources to make solar powered moving bugs, taking part in real scientific research to monitor the impact of climate change on penguin populations and investigated our food carbon footprint.

Pupils reflected on the beauty & complexity of the natural world through environmental art, symmetry in nature and work on David Attenborough's amazing wildlife film footage.

On Thursday, through writing speeches & producing films & posters on environmental problems, we saw how everyone, no matter how young, can speak up for environmental issues. The children presented their well-researched speeches and films with real passion.

The week culminated in a visit from 2 authors, Tim Tilley & Sara Louise, whose books (Witch Storm / Betty Honeybee) have strong environmental themes running through them.

Environmental work like this is important to us at St Ives. We want to inspire the children to want to make a difference and look after the world they live in. It is work like this which helped us gain our Eco Schools Green Flag in 2020 & why we were shortlisted in the environmental category at the Independent School of the Year Awards 2019.
