Reception is the first year of school and children join the September after their fourth birthday. Our Reception class is made up of children who have moved up from our Nursery, as well as new joiners who all are made to feel equally welcome.
Our Reception class is based in our light and airy pre-prep building in a dedicated classroom with a brand new, well-equipped outdoor learning area that is used at every opportunity. We have a dedicated Reception teacher and teaching assistant which means we get to know the children very quickly and allow all of them to feel settled and happy. This also allows us to provide individualised next steps for their learning journey and help each child reach their full potential.
We provide a supportive and stimulating learning environment where the children are actively encouraged to apply their learning and explore their own ideas through independent play. They are taught Mathematics and Literacy everyday as well as a host of cross-curricular activities. We also have specialist teachers in French, Music and PE.
We value open lines of communication and staff are always on hand at the beginning and end of each day to provide support in any way they can. There are Parents’ Evenings in the Autumn and Spring Terms to provide regular feedback on each child’s progress, as well as written reports at the end of each half term.
Reception children also enjoy a weekly afternoon of Forest School in our dedicated eight acre forest. This provides children with the opportunity to explore their learning in an alternative environment, as well as helping children develop greater confidence in themselves and their abilities, learn collaborative working skills and exposes them to manageable risks.
Reception children also have a weekly swimming lesson all year round, at no extra cost.
Reception Readiness Sessions
Our Reception Readiness programme usually starts at school at the beginning of May. These sessions are open to all children signed up to start Reception in September (whether they are already in our Nursery or not). Sessions involve coming into the Reception class, meeting the Reception teacher and spending an hour getting to know the other children and experiencing life at 'big' school.
