St Ives Enjoys Harry Potter Festival

The week started with fancy dress, with an array of Harry Potter characters roaming the halls of Hogwarts.  The Science Laboratory at St Ives was turned into ‘The Potions Room’ where the children became bubble technologists creating the best ‘Hubble Bubble’ mixture.  In their Sports lessons the children were split into Ravenclaw and Griffindor houses and had to compete against each other in a competition. The little witches and wizards loved riding their broomsticks (lacrosse sticks!) around the grand hall and trying to get the Quaffle into the goals. It was a very close match but Ravenclaw just managed to score the final goal before the whistle blew. In Forest School, the children transformed branches into magic wands and enjoyed running around the magical forest casting spells.  The children also spent the day with Paul Stephenson who worked on the special effects of 'The Prisoner of Azkaban' and 'The Goblet of Fire' and the children were fascinated to learn how scenes are put together on a movie set.  The festival also included visits to Harry Potter World for the children in Years 3-6 and a visit to Hobbledown Adventure Farm Park and Zoo for the Reception to Year 3 children, which they all loved.

Kay Goldsworthy, Head Teacher at St Ives, said “The Harry Potter Festival has been an enormous success this week.  We’re firm believers at St Ives that creative learning helps improve academic performance, bolsters confidence and self-esteem, enhances social skills and leads to better communication.  We hold three-day festivals every term which are all completely different and it is wonderful to see how the children thrive during them.  I loved dressing up as Harry Potter this week too!”
